Artistic Research – Ethos and Challenges
Workshop mit Jonathan Impett (Orpheus Institute Ghent) – Offen für alle Interessierten
Orpheus is a leading centre for artistic research in music, as well as a coordination hub for
the inter-university doctoral programme docARTES. At Orpheus, there is an influx of research
fellows who not only develop, perform and publish particular multi-year artistic research
projects, but as a research community, actively shape the discourse and understanding of
artistic research. Is it a discipline, a meta-discipline, an ethos? What current challenges arise?
Jonathan Impett is Director of Research at the Orpheus Institute in Ghent (BE), as well as
Associate Professor at Middlesex University in London. His professional and research
activities cover many aspects of contemporary musical practice, as trumpet player, composer
and theorist. At Orpheus, he leads the research cluster Music, Thought and Technology, he is
co-convenor of the Sound Arguments lab series, and he is co-editor-in-chief of the open access
journal ECHO. His research is concerned with the discourses and practices of contemporary
musical creativity, particularly the nature of the contemporary technologically-situated
musical artefact.
