Titel: Musical disobedience for performers

Daniel Leech-Wilkinson, King’s College London

Classical musicians are reported to suffer more anxiety and injury than any other group of workers. Injury is considered an acceptable price for the performance of composers‘ imagined wishes. This is a scandal. It is enabled by a set of delusionary beliefs taught to classical musicians from childhood and enforced throughout their careers. This talk uses recordings of performances from 120 years to expose these delusions, and reveals the prejudices that underlie performance criticism. What does all this imply for performers today? How do we differentiate between ideological responses to performance and musical responses? What must a persuasive performance achieve? How different could performances be? What are the dangers of current directions in performance? How could classical performances change us?
