DESCRIPTION:Contradict – Ideas for a New World\nThomas Burkhalter\nNorient\, Bern\nWhen two friends collect money for the so-called “suffering in America” in the streets of Accra\, is it for fun\, political provocation\, or a prophecy? Two Swiss filmmakers will answer these questions with the help of seven musicians from Ghana – M3NSA\, Wanlov The Kubolor\, Adomaa\, Worlasi\, Akan\, Mutombo Da Poet\, and Poetra Asantewa – who have written new songs and produced video clips especially for the documentary film Contradict. \nTomorrow’s ideas and trends are emerging more decentralized than ever in a globalized world. What do global developments and shifts in values look like from the ground up in Ghana and the African continent? How do we want to confront and contradict those changes? Can new visions for the future become global realities? \nA film by Peter Guyer and Thomas Burkhalter \nBio: Thomas Burkhalter\, PhD\, is an anthropologist\, multidisciplinary artist\, and writer from Bern\, Switzerland. He is the founder and director of Norient and the Norient Festival. He has co-directed documentary films\, including Contradict (Berner Filmpreis 2020 + Al-Jazeera Witness)\, and AV/theatre performances. Burkhalter is also the author and co-editor of several books\, such as Local Music Scenes and Globalization: Transnational Platforms in Beirut (Routledge)\, The Arab Avant Garde: Musical Innovation in the Middle East (Wesleyan University Press)\, and Seismographic Sounds – Visions of a New World (Norient Books). His experimental radio feature\, Gqom Edits – A Durban Visit\, was nominated for the Prix Europa in 2017. DESCRIPTION:Film by Peter Guyer & Thomas Burkhalter \nFilmscreening – eine Veranstaltung des Forschungsforums mit anschließender Diskussion mit dem Regisseur Thomas Burkhalter \n(2020; 89´mit engl. UT) \nDie zwei Schweizer Filmemacher Peter Guyer und Thomas Burkhalter gehen gemeinsam mit sechs Musikerinnen und Musikern aus Ghana (M3nsa\, Wanlov The Kubolor\, Adomaa\, Worlasi\, Akan\, Mutombo Da Poet and Poetra Asantewa) auf Spurensuche nach den Auswirkungen der amerikanischen Übermacht am afrikanischen Kontinent und dessen eigenem Potential\, wenn es um die Entwicklung neuer Zukunftsmodelle in der Weltordnung des 21. Jahrhunderts geht. Von allen Beteiligten wurden für den Film eigene Songs und Videoclips produziert\, die sich kritisch\, humorvoll und teils provokativ mit diesen Fragen beschäftigen. Daraus entsteht das vielschichtige Stimmungsbild einer afrikanischen Vision für die Welt\, das aus Hinterhöfen und privaten Räumen heraus eine grenzüberschreitende Strahlkraft entwickelt. DESCRIPTION:Künstlerische Forschung zum Anfassen! – Die Laufzeit der Ausstellung ist von 24.05 – 21.09.2025 \nDie GMPU zeigt in der Neuen Galerie Graz Ergebnisse des FWF-Forschungsprojektes „Simultane Ankünfte! – noch bis 21.09.2025 zu sehen! \nBeschreibung: \nRotationskörper ist die erste von zwei Ausstellungen im Rahmen der Simultanen Ankünfte (simularr) – einem künstlerischen Forschungsprojekt zu neuen oder andersartigen \nFormen der Kollaboration. Dabei geht es um Praktiken\, die aus dem Kreis mehrerer\, Seite an Seite arbeitender Künstler*innen-Forscher*innen mit verschiedenartigen Sprachen und Medien entstehen. Was passiert\, wenn Schaffensräume und Denkräume geteilt werden? Welche neuen Raumtypen entspringen der Zusammenkunft und der Bewegung der Teilnehmenden und wie verhalten sie sich zu den Arbeitsumgebungen der Gruppe? Im Zusammentragen der materiellen Formen und Notationengemeinsamer Prozesse wird es möglich\, dem Spiel von Nähe und Ferne zwischen den Individuen und dem Wiedererscheinen von Formen und Ideen an unerwarteten Orten beizuwohnen. \nDie Drehbewegung von Körpern lässt Kurven zu Volumen werden\, überführt Konturen in räumliche Gebilde. Wird die geometrische Abstraktion der Rotationskörper weiter gedacht\, könnten solche Bewegungen metaphorisch die Art von Unternehmung kennzeichnen\, die die Gestaltung einer Ausstellung auf Basis künstlerischer Forschung erfordert – ein Zwischenreich aus künstlerischer Praxis und systematischer Untersuchung\, worin Fragen von Ästhetik\, Wissen und Ethik nicht nur voneinander abhängen\, sondern ein rhizomatisches Geflecht bilden. Die reichhaltigen Materialien\, die während der dreijährigen Durchführung von simularr entstanden sind\, fordern eine bestimmte Emanzipation vom Projekt ein: Die Ausstellung „repräsentiert“ das Projekt nicht zur Gänze\, sondern macht eine bestimmte Drehung um dieses herum und dabei ausgewählte künstlerische Kristallisationen sichtbar\, die während der Forschungsintervalle gewonnen wurden. \nDie Schau versammelt Objekte und Vorhaben der dreizehn Künstler*innen-Forscher*innen\, die sich während der Laufzeit des Projektes begegnet sind:\nAndrea Bakketun\, Susanne Bosch\, Nayarí Castillo\, Miguel Alejandro Castillo Le Maitre\, Emma Cocker\, Ludvig Elblaus\, Caroline Gatt\, Franziska Hederer\, Daniele Pozzi\, Elena Redaelli\,\nCharlotta Ruth\, Hanns Holger Rutz\, Fulya Uçanok. \nKuratiert von: Günther Holler-Schuster

DESCRIPTION:Antrittsvorlesung: Le berceau de la musique: the Perception of the Italian Style in 18th  Century Europe\nGiulia Nuti – Univ.-Prof. für Cembalo und Historische Aufführungspraxis\, GMPU\nImprovisation was at the heart of 18th century debates on national musical styles and expression. In the Italian tradition\, ornamentation of written parts was expected and encouraged\, while the realization of basso continuo accompaniment was both essential to the composition and beyond the composer’s control. Italian music was celebrated for this expressive freedom\, yet many critics saw its dependence on basso continuo and ornamentation as excessive\, allowing performers too much interpretative license. \nThis presentation examines contemporary descriptions from non-Italian sources to identify the improvisatory techniques most admired and those that drew the sharpest criticism\, with particular reference to the realization of the accompaniment. Through this analysis\, we gain insight into the improvisational techniques employed by performers and their impact on performance practices\, helping us reconstruct — or at least imagine — how the musicians of the time shaped and defined the Italian style.
